Mushrooms
As well as being a potential source of nourishment (albeit a hazardous one), many of the mushrooms found in Angband seem to have absorbed magical energy from their surroundings and can have interesting or dangerous effects on a character who eats them.
When unidentified, mushrooms will generally be described by reference to their appearance, either colour or text. These descriptions are consistent (within one game; they are randomly assigned for each new game), so, for example, if you find a Slimy Mushroom, it will be the same as any other Slimy Mushroom.
Mushrooms with deleterious effects normally only work temporarily, so although eating unknown mushrooms is risky, if carefuly planned it is normally not fatal.
Beneficial mushrooms including healing and restorative ones. Note that unlike other magical items, of which there are mfar more good than bad items, there are as many bad mushrooms as good.
Using a Mushroom
To use a mushroom, use the 'E' command (for 'eat'). If you have more than one mushroom available to choose from, you will need to select the correct one. The effects of unknown mushrooms will normally be immediately apparent.
